Reach ≠ value: where crypto information actually lives

r = 0.02correlation between reach and information value across 62 channels — statistically zero

We scored 62 crypto channels across ten categories on the value they deliver to a long-term investor — not on how loud they are. The result is the empirical backbone of Moonkelp: the loudest sources are not the most valuable, and most of what you read is an echo of a handful of originals.

The six findings that matter

Reach doesn’t predict value

Across all 62 channels the correlation between reach and average information value is r = 0.02 — statistically zero. Several of the highest-reach channels land in the value basement.

Almost everything is an echo

The raw data comes from a handful of originals — DefiLlama, Glassnode / Coin Metrics, Farside, GitHub, governance forums, SEC dockets, plus a few research houses. YouTubers, newsletters and most podcasts repackage them.

2022 is the character test

Luna / FTX cleanly separates who warned or honestly reckoned with the collapse from who shilled to the very end.

Big names, poor records

On our reading of the publicly documented calls — rough hit rates, not a formal backtest — the loudest retail channels landed 10–20%; the most disciplined structural voices about 50%.

Paid research rarely pays off

By our estimate, ~90% of the decision-relevant signal sits in free raw data — DefiLlama, Glassnode’s free tier, Coin Metrics, Farside.

A minimal diet: ~7 sources

Under two hours a week. Everything beyond that is redundancy or entertainment.

The minimal information diet of an experienced investor is ~7 sources and under two hours a week — Moonkelp is that diet, automated to 60 seconds a day.

How to read the map

Each channel is placed by reach (horizontal) and average value (vertical — from information value, incentive cleanliness, time efficiency and fit). Bubble size is reach; the fill marks the recommendation (essential / optional / cut).

The cloud is flat — that flatness is the finding. Bottom-right is loud but low-value; the top-left holds the quiet, high-value “pearls”.

Method & limits

Broad web research across public data and the documented record, plus first-party Semrush domain analytics for hard traffic figures. Reach numbers cite public sources; self-reported figures are marked as such in the underlying table.

Track-record samples are rough hit rates, not a formal backtest. Check it yourself: the r = 0.02 headline is computable from the full scorecard below — the reach column against the Ø column. Scores are reasoned expert judgment, not an objective index.

The universe: the highest-reach channels in each category plus the sources practitioners cite most — 62 in all, a curated field, not a census. Anchors: 5 = consistently strong on the documented record, 1 = consistently weak. Verdicts follow the composite Ø, with an editorial override where the record outweighs the average. One evaluator — deep research plus editorial review, no inter-rater statistics. Data as of Jul 18, 2026.

The named verdicts in the map are editorial opinion based on the documented public record. “Cut” means a channel doesn’t fit a long-term investor’s daily diet — a fit-for-purpose judgment, not a general one. Perspectives, not investment advice. This study is reviewed quarterly; corrections normally ship within days. Corrections: contact@moonkelp.com.

What this study is built on

62 crypto information channels, scored in July 2026. Each was rated on the value it delivers to a long-term investor — not on reach — drawing on public data, the documented track record, and our own Semrush organic-traffic figures.

Traffic & reach data

Ground-truth records

Company & funding data

Sources were cited by name and date in the research; the exact fetched pages aren’t stored, so each link points to the provider’s own site rather than the specific page. Traffic figures are our own Semrush pulls — primarily the US database, so they compare sources rather than count absolute audiences.
