What it measures
Bitcoin’s share of total crypto value — a rotation signal (Bitcoin vs the rest), not a core gauge.
Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin’s share of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization. It is not a valuation gauge but a rotation signal: it tells you where capital sits within crypto — concentrated in Bitcoin, or spread across the long tail of altcoins.
How to read it
Rising dominance means capital is concentrating in Bitcoin — typical of risk-off phases, early recoveries, and moments when institutional flows (which are overwhelmingly BTC-first) dominate the tape. Falling dominance means capital is rotating outward into altcoins, historically a mid-to-late-cycle pattern often labeled “altcoin season”. Neither direction is inherently bullish or bearish for the market as a whole; dominance describes the market’s internal structure, not its direction.

Frequently asked questions
What is Bitcoin dominance?
The percentage of the entire crypto market’s capitalization held by Bitcoin alone. At 60 % dominance, six of every ten dollars in crypto sit in BTC.
What does falling Bitcoin dominance mean?
Capital is rotating beyond Bitcoin into altcoins — either because altcoins are rallying harder, or because Bitcoin is stagnating while the rest catches up. Sustained falls have historically accompanied the speculative, altcoin-heavy phase of bull cycles.
Does high dominance mean altcoins will fall?
Not mechanically. High or rising dominance says altcoins are underperforming Bitcoin, not that they must decline in absolute terms. In strong risk-off phases both can fall while dominance still rises, because altcoins fall faster.
