What it measures

Dollar strength — crypto has tended to move against the dollar.

The US Dollar Index (DXY) measures the dollar against a basket of major currencies — euro, yen, pound, and three smaller peers. It is the standard shorthand for “dollar strength”, and crypto has tended to trade against it: strong dollar, weak Bitcoin, and vice versa.

How to read it

A rising DXY typically reflects global risk aversion or tightening dollar liquidity — both headwinds for crypto, which behaves as a far point on the risk curve. A falling DXY loosens global financial conditions and has accompanied most of Bitcoin’s major advances. The correlation is a tendency, not a law: it weakens when crypto-native forces (ETF flows, halvings, regulation) dominate the tape. Moves of a few percent matter more than the absolute level.

Frequently asked questions

What currencies make up the DXY?

Euro (about 58 %), Japanese yen, British pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc. Because of the euro’s weight, DXY is largely a dollar-versus-euro gauge with the others attached.

Why does a strong dollar hurt Bitcoin?

A strengthening dollar usually signals tightening global liquidity and risk aversion — capital retreating to the world’s reserve currency. Risk assets priced in dollars, crypto foremost among them, have historically struggled in those phases and thrived when the dollar weakened.

Which DXY does Moonkelp show?

The ICE US Dollar Index (the standard DX-Y.NYB quote), refreshed each trading day. It is the same index quoted on trading terminals — not the Fed’s broader trade-weighted dollar, which uses a different basket and scale.
